CELL DEATH & DISEASE - 15 Aug 2023
Long-living individuals (LLIs) escape age-related cardiovascular complications until the very last stage of life. Previous studies have shown that a Longevity-Associated Variant (LAV) of the BPI Fold Containing Family B Member 4 (BPIFB4) gene correlates with an extraordinarily prolonged life span. Moreover, delivery of the LAV-BPIFB4 gene exerted therapeutic action in murine models of atheroscl...

CARDIOVASCULAR DIABETOLOGY - 17 Aug 2023
Cardiac steatosis is an early yet overlooked feature of diabetic cardiomyopathy. There is no available therapy to treat this condition. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are used as first or second-line therapy in different types of cancer. In cancer patients with diabetes mellitus, TKIs reportedly improved glycemic control, allowing insulin discontinuation. They also reduced liver steatosis in...

ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH - 28 Oct 2023
Most studies examining the effects of neighbourhood urban design on cardiometabolic health focused solely on the built or natural environment. Also, they did not consider the roles of neighbourhood socio-economic status (SES) and ambient air pollution in the observed associations, and the extent to which these associations were mediated by physical activity and sedentary behaviours. We used data...
Improved Flow Dynamics of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation via Design Modification of Dual-Lumen Cannulas.
Marjan Azimi; Sam Liao; Ashkan Vatani; Aidan Burrell; Shaun D Gregory
ASAIO JOURNAL (AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR ARTIFICIAL INTERNAL ORGANS : 1992) - 01 Nov 2022
Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) supports patients with severe respiratory failure not responding to conventional treatments. Single-site jugular venous cannulation with dual-lumen cannulas (DLC) have several advantages over traditional single-lumen cannulas, however, bleeding and thrombosis are common, limiting their clinical utility. This study numerically investigate...

KIDNEY INTERNATIONAL - 01 Nov 2022
Dyslipidemia associates with and usually precedes the onset of chronic kidney disease (CKD), but a comprehensive assessment of molecular lipid species associated with risk of CKD is lacking. Here, we sought to identify fasting plasma lipids associated with risk of CKD among American Indians in the Strong Heart Family Study, a large-scale community-dwelling of individuals, followed by replicatio...

HEART, LUNG & CIRCULATION - 01 Nov 2022
Late referral for heart transplantation (HTx) is associated with worse patient outcomes. There are no universally accepted definitions of what constitutes a timely referral for HTx assessment. To evaluate the impact of late referral (LR) on HTx outcomes. This single-centre retrospective observational study included 80 patients undergoing HTx between 2016-2019. We applied a simple clinical tool, d...

MEDICINE AND SCIENCE IN SPORTS AND EXERCISE - 01 Nov 2022
To promote greater muscular strength across the life course and, in turn, help improve long-term health outcomes, strategies aimed at increasing muscular strength are required. To inform these strategies, this study identified childhood factors associated with muscular strength trajectories.Prospective longitudinal study of 1280 Childhood Determinants of Adult Health participants who had a rang...

JOURNAL OF HYPERTENSION - 01 Nov 2022
Several definitions of night-time BP exist for the calculation of nocturnal blood pressure (BP) based on 24-h BP measurements. How much these methods differ regarding the resulting nocturnal blood pressure values, under which circumstances these differences become clinically meaningful, and under which circumstances diary-adjusted measurements should be used preferentially remains uncertain.Dat...

INTERNAL MEDICINE JOURNAL - 02 Nov 2022
Primary aldosteronism (PA) represents the most common and potentially curable cause of secondary hypertension. However, PA is not commonly screened for, and up to 34% of patients who screen positive do not complete the full diagnostic process. This suggests that the diagnostic process may pose a barrier to patients and may contribute to the under-diagnosis of PA.To evaluate the willingness of t...
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Therapy for Bicuspid Aortic Valve Stenosis.
Nalin H Dayawansa; Samer Noaman; Lung En Teng; Nay Min Htun
JOURNAL OF CARDIOVASCULAR DEVELOPMENT AND DISEASE - 09 Oct 2023
Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has become first-line treatment for older adults with severe aortic stenosis (AS), however, patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) have been traditionally excluded from randomised trials and guidelines. As familiarity and proficiency of TAVI operators have improved, case-series and observational data have demonstrated the feasibility of successf...

CELL GENOMICS - 11 Oct 2023
Many quantitative trait loci (QTLs) are in non-coding regions. Therefore, QTLs are assumed to affect gene regulation. Gene expression and RNA splicing are primary steps of transcription, so DNA variants changing gene expression (eVariants) or RNA splicing (sVariants) are expected to significantly affect phenotypes. We quantify the contribution of eVariants and sVariants detected from 16 tissues...
CSM-Potential2: A comprehensive deep learning platform for the analysis of protein interacting interfaces.

PROTEINS - 23 Oct 2023
Proteins are molecular machinery that participate in virtually all essential biological functions within the cell, which are tightly related to their 3D structure. The importance of understanding protein structure-function relationship is highlighted by the exponential growth of experimental structures, which has been greatly expanded by recent breakthroughs in protein structure prediction, mos...
Characterizing and predicting ccRCC-causing missense mutations in Von Hippel-Lindau disease.

HUMAN MOLECULAR GENETICS - 26 Oct 2023
Mutations within the Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor gene are known to cause VHL disease, which is characterized by the formation of cysts and tumors in multiple organs of the body, particularly clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). A major challenge in clinical practice is determining tumor risk from a given mutation in the VHL gene. Previous efforts have been hindered by limited a...

ISCIENCE - 20 Oct 2023
Glucocorticoids (GCs) are potent anti-inflammatory agents and are broadly used in treating rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, albeit with adverse side effects associated with long-term usage. The negative consequences of GC therapy provide an impetus for research into gaining insights into the molecular mechanisms of GC action. We have previously reported that granulocyte-macrophage colony-sti...

THE JOURNAL OF PEDIATRICS - 15 Oct 2023
High cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in adulthood is important for survival from major chronic diseases and preserving good health. We examined how childhood CRF tracks, or persists, into adulthood. Among a cohort of 748 school children followed over 34 years, we found child CRF correlated with young- (r=0.30) and mid-adulthood (r=0.16) CRF.

THE JOURNAL OF PEDIATRICS - 13 Oct 2023
This 26-year study found that non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) levels tracked from infancy to young adulthood, suggesting early-life non-HDL-C could predict future levels. However, infancy-onset dietary counseling reduced the odds of maintaining at-risk non-HDL-C, highlighting the potential importance of early interventions in preventing cardiovascular risk associated with h...
