Gene name errors are widespread in the scientific literature
Ziemann, M; El-Osta, A; Eren, Y
GENOME BIOL - 23 Aug 2016
The spreadsheet software Microsoft Excel, when used with default settings, is known to convert gene names to dates and floating-point numbers. A programmatic scan of leading genomics journals reveals that approximately one-fifth of papers with supplementary Excel gene lists contain erroneous gene name conversions.

Wang, Y; Urguhart, DM; Wluka, AE; O'Sullivan, R; Cicuttini, FM; Jones, G; Teichtahl, AJ
ARTHRITIS RES THER - 07 May 2015
INTRODUCTION: Although physical inactivity has been associated with numerous chronic musculoskeletal complaints, few studies have examined its associations with spinal structures. Moreover, previously reported associations between physical activity and low back pain are conflicting. This study examined the associations between physical inactivity and intervertebral disc height, paraspinal fat ...
Bone geometry of the hip is associated with obesity and early structural damage--a 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging study of community-based adults
Wang, Y; Zhu, M; Wluka, AE; Giles, GG; Smith, S; Urguhart, D; O'Sullivan, R; Cicuttini, FM; Teichtahl, AJ
ARTHRITIS RES THER - 30 Apr 2015
INTRODUCTION: The mechanism by which obesity increases the risk of hip osteoarthritis is unclear. One possibility may be by mediating abnormalities in bony geometry, which may in turn be associated with early structural abnormalities, such as cartilage defects and bone marrow lesions. METHODS: One hundred and forty one older adults with no diagnosed hip osteoarthritis had weight and body mas...

Owen, N; Hadgraft, NT; Brakenridge, CL; LaMontagne, AD; Healy, GN; Lawler, SP; Dunstan, DW; Fjeldsoe, BS; Lynch, BM
BMC PUBLIC HEALTH - 05 Sep 2016
BACKGROUND: Office workers spend a large proportion of their working hours sitting. This may contribute to an increased risk of chronic disease and premature mortality. While there is growing interest in workplace interventions targeting prolonged sitting, few qualitative studies have explored workers' perceptions of reducing occupational sitting outside of an intervention context. This stud...
Improvements in life expectancy among Australians due to reductions in smoking: results from a risk percentiles approach
Mannan, H; Gambhir, M; McNeil, JJ; Magliano, DJ; Curtis, AJ; Forbes, A; Lowthian, JA
BMC PUBLIC HEALTH - 26 Jan 2016
BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoking is a major burden on the Australian population in terms of health, social and economic costs. Because of this, in 2008, all Australian Governments agreed to set targets to reduce prevalence of smoking to 10 % by 2018 and subsequently introduced several very strong anti-smoking measures. On this backdrop, we estimated in 2012-13 the impact of several scenarios rela...
Too much sitting and all-cause mortality: is there a causal link?
Stamatakis, E; Biddle, SJ; Bennie, JA; van Uffelen, JG; Bauman, AE; Chau, JY; Dunstan, D; Owen, N
BMC PUBLIC HEALTH - 26 Jul 2016
BACKGROUND: Sedentary behaviours (time spent sitting, with low energy expenditure) are associated with deleterious health outcomes, including all-cause mortality. Whether this association can be considered causal has yet to be established. Using systematic reviews and primary studies from those reviews, we drew upon Bradford Hill's criteria to consider the likelihood that sedentary behaviour...
Experimental validation of methods for differential gene expression analysis and sample pooling in RNA-seq
Lazarus, R; Mors, O; Li, Q; Qvist, P; Børglum, AD; Christensen, JH; Lescai, F; Nyegaard, M; Ju, J; Rajkumar, AP
BMC GENOMICS - 25 Jul 2015
BACKGROUND: Massively parallel cDNA sequencing (RNA-seq) experiments are gradually superseding microarrays in quantitative gene expression profiling. However, many biologists are uncertain about the choice of differentially expressed gene (DEG) analysis methods and the validity of cost-saving sample pooling strategies for their RNA-seq experiments. Hence, we performed experimental validation o...

Bauman, A; Banks, E; McNamara, BJ; Joshy, G; Gubhaju, L; Eades, SJ; Macniven, R
BMC MED RES METHODOL - 11 May 2016
BACKGROUND: This study aimed to characterise the factors relating to participation in a postal follow-up study in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal individuals, given the need to quantify potential biases from loss to follow-up and the lack of evidence regarding postal surveys among Aboriginal people. METHODS: The first 100,000 participants from the Sax Institute's 45 and Up Study, a large s...
Current and projected burden of heart failure in the Australian adult population: a substantive but still ill-defined major health issue
Carrington, MJ; Tuttle, C; Ahamed, Y; Chan, YK; Teng, TK; Ball, J; Stewart, S
BMC HEALTH SERV RES - 21 Sep 2016
BACKGROUND: Comprehensive epidemiological data to describe the burden of heart failure (HF) in Australia remain lacking despite its importance as a major health issue. Herewith, we estimate the current and future burden of HF in Australia using best available data. METHODS: Australian-specific and the most congruent international epidemiological and health utilisation data were applied t...

BMC PEDIATR - 21 Oct 2016
BACKGROUND: Australian Aboriginal children experience a disproportionate burden of social and health disadvantage. Avoidable hospitalizations present a potentially modifiable health gap that can be targeted and monitored using population data. This study quantifies inequalities in pediatric avoidable hospitalizations between Australian Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children. METHODS: Thi...
Sharing success - understanding barriers and enablers to secondary prophylaxis delivery for rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease
Maguire, GP; Kevat, PM; Rémond, MG; Mills, J; Chamberlain-Salaun, J
BMC CARDIOVASC DISORD - 31 Aug 2016
BACKGROUND: Rheumatic fever (RF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) cause considerable morbidity and mortality amongst Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations. Secondary antibiotic prophylaxis in the form of 4-weekly benzathine penicillin injections is the mainstay of control programs. Evidence suggests, however, that delivery rates of such prophylaxis are poor. METHODS:...
